The inaugural “Microbiomes at Guelph” Research Day was a total success! Held on May 12, 2023 at the University of Guelph’s Arboretum, the event brought together over 100 attendees —including faculty, postdoctoral fellows and graduate students, and staff— who share a common interest in microbiome-related research questions and methodologies across a diverse range of environs and hosts, including soils, plants, humans, and animals.
Agenda
The day included a morning session where faculty introduced themselves and their lab programs, a session to introduce the capabilities at the U of G that exist for microbiome research in terms of facilities, a trainee poster presentation and competition, and breakout group discussions to advance microbiome research capacity, collaboration and trainee support on campus.
Faculty Research Overview
Nearly 30 faculty members across U of G described their microbiome research program, methods used, and ‘most vexing question’, using a single slide. You can view and download the slides below.
Microbiome Research Capabilities
Presentations were given about the NMR facility, the imaging facility, the FACS facility, the R user group, and a prospective presentation on facilities that would be offered by MiPAC (a current CFI-IF application under review). You are welcome to view and download the slides below and visit the Analytical Services page for additional information.
Trainee Poster Competition
Twenty students from four colleges presented updates on their microbiome research and were independently rated by 16 judges. Congratulations to Bianka Ketheeswaranathan (van Raay lab), Evan Mayer (Dunfield lab), and Isaac Firth (Sorbara lab) for winning first, second, and third place in the competition, respectively! Thank you to Sony Instruments for funding gift prizes.
A big thanks to everyone who participated in this fantastic event, and to our sponsors for making this possible. We look forward to strengthening connections and fostering research among microbiome experts and enthusiasts at U of G!
